If you live inside the triangle bounded by Delaware Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, and the Brandywine, the neighborhood you know in February isn't the one you're living in right now. Summer flips two switches at once in Trolley Square. A long-empty storefront came back to life over the winter, and starting in mid-June the free concert calendar at Rockford Tower turns the ten-minute walk from your front door into the reason people from the suburbs are parking on your block on Monday nights.
Here is what to do with that, from someone who works these streets year-round.
The 1709 Delaware handoff
The single most useful thing to know this summer is that Skratch made its official debut in Trolley Square at 1709 Delaware Avenue, tipping its hat to Scratch Magoo's, the bar that operated there for most of its 29 years from 1989 to 2018. The opening date was December 19, 2025, so July and August are the first real patio-weather months this room has hosted a crowd in seven years.
The lineage is not a marketing detail. General manager Stan Yau bartended at Scratch Magoo's for years before leaving hospitality for an executive search firm, and he has framed the return as bringing back something specific for the Wilmington community he grew up serving. Yau's own words on the pivot: "I've spent my last three years trying to figure out what's next."
What you're getting inside is not a Scratch Magoo's tribute act. The kitchen is positioned as elevated comfort food and handcrafted cocktails in a laid-back setting, with a mix of burgers, pasta, seafood, brunch, and happy hour specials. If you've been defaulting to Kid Shelleen's for a Tuesday burger since 2018, there is now a second answer inside a two-minute walk.
Why Mondays got better this summer
This is the part most Trolley Square residents I talk to underuse.
Friends of Wilmington Parks partners with Delaware State Parks to present a free Summer Concert Series in Rockford Park on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8 pm, with a food truck each night and beer from Wilmington Brew Works sold to benefit the parks. The venue is the lawn adjacent to Rockford Tower. From most of Trolley Square you can walk it in under fifteen minutes, and you never touch a paid parking meter.

Source for the schedule is the Delaware State Parks and Visit Wilmington event listings, so dates and acts can shift for weather. The tower itself, over 100 years old, is open during concerts, and the lawn is set up for picnic blankets and dogs.
The practical read: a Monday evening in Trolley Square in late July is now a walkable double feature. Live music with a food truck at Rockford, dinner or a drink on Delaware Avenue on the way home. That combination does not exist here from November through May.
Pairing the concert with the block
Because the concert ends at 8 pm and every kitchen on Delaware Avenue is still open, the two most useful sequences are these:
- Concert first, late dinner second. Walk down from the tower to Trolley Square Oyster House at 1707 Delaware Avenue, part of the Big Fish Restaurant Group that also runs Big Fish Grill on the Riverfront and Bella Coast on Concord Pike. You are literally next door to Skratch.
- Early bite, then the lawn. Kid Shelleen's at 14th and Scott, in the neighborhood since 1983, opens for lunch at 11 and stays open through dinner. Order at 5:30, be on the Rockford lawn by 6:20.
- Coffee-into-picnic play. Brew HaHa in Trolley Square handles the pre-show iced-coffee run. Grab something to carry, then loop up through the residential streets to the lawn.
- Old-school stop. Kelly's Logan House is on the walking line if you want a beer on the way rather than a table.
None of that involves getting in a car. That is the thesis of a Trolley Square summer, and it is why the neighborhood earns its 91 walkability rating more in July than in any other month.
The Wednesday alternative most residents forget
If Monday doesn't work, the same organizers run a parallel Wednesday series in Brandywine Park.
Brandywine Park is home to the Brandywine Zoo, the iconic Sugar Bowl, the Josephine Fountain, and the Jasper Crane Rose Garden, and the Sugar Bowl is where the Wednesday concerts land at 6:30. From the south end of Trolley Square you can walk down to the park along Kentmere Parkway. It is a different geography than Rockford, closer to the water, and the crowd tends to skew toward downtown workers stopping on the way home rather than the family-blanket contingent that fills Rockford's lawn.
The Wednesday option matters for another reason. Wilmington State Parks does not charge entrance fees at Brandywine Park, Rockford Park, or H. Fletcher Brown Park. Two free concerts a week within walking distance of your front door is a summer amenity most Wilmington neighborhoods simply do not have.
The June anchor, for next year's planning
If you moved to Trolley Square after last summer, put one more thing on the calendar for June 2027. St. Anthony's Italian Festival, held this year from June 7 through June 13, is sponsored by St. Anthony of Padua Parish and is the primary fundraiser for St. Anthony of Padua Grade School, and it bills itself as one of the largest Italian-American cultural events in the nation. It runs at Ninth and DuPont Streets, which is a short walk from most of Trolley Square. Miss it in 2026 and mark the second week of June next year.
A change worth flagging for 2026 was that the Feast Day Mass at 12:30 pm and the Procession of Saints at 2 pm both moved to the opening Sunday, June 7, so the schedule you remember from prior years no longer applies.
What the neighborhood looks like right now
A few smaller things residents ask me about, in no particular order:
- Trolley Square Market at 25B Trolley Square is the neighborhood's plants-apothecary-vintage-gifts stop, open Tuesday through Sunday.
- The Retail Shops at the Flat Iron Building anchor the square itself, with Gianni's Pizza occupying the front half of the building and running outdoor seating.
- Catherine Rooney's, Fabrizio Salon, and Moore Brothers wine are the other names visitors ask about most, all inside the walkable core.
- Café Verdi, the Italian mainstay on the square, had operated in the heart of historic Trolley Square for 30 years before closing. That leaves a specific gap in sit-down Italian on the immediate block, which is worth knowing if you're pointing out-of-town guests toward a red-sauce dinner. Piccolina Toscana up the avenue is the current default.
The through-line here is that Trolley Square in summer rewards a specific behavior. Walk out your door. Do not drive. Chain two things together that would each be small on their own. A free concert plus a first look at Skratch. A Sugar Bowl show plus a stop at Brew HaHa on the way back. That is what makes this neighborhood distinct from the rest of Wilmington between June and September, and it is why the residents who use it hardest are the ones who moved here on purpose.
