Monday Belongs to Hagley, Wednesday to Winterthur: Reading Greenville's Holiday Calendar

Winterthur's Yuletide season opens on Saturday, November 21. Hagley's holiday season opens six days later, on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The two estates sit a short drive apart on the Brandywine side of Greenville, and they close on different days of the week. Winterthur is closed Mondays. Hagley is closed to the general public on Wednesdays. If you live nearby, those two days matter more than either opening date.

Mt. Cuba Center adds a third calendar on top of that. Its paid holiday workshops are bunched into the first two weekends of December. Anyone trying to fit all three into one month will find the calendars line up on only a handful of days.

Two Estates, Two Different Days Off

Winterthur's Yuletide runs November 21, 2026, through January 3, 2027. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Holidays at Hagley runs November 27 through January 3, and the first day is listed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hagley's ticket page says the museum is open six days a week and closed to the general public on Wednesdays. Last admission is one hour before closing. Hagley's holiday date list follows that rule and skips December 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.

Here's how a typical December week looks once both seasons are running:

Day Winterthur Yuletide Holidays at Hagley
Monday Closed Open
Tuesday Open 10 to 5 Open
Wednesday Open 10 to 5 Closed to general public
Thursday Open 10 to 5 Open
Friday Open, Holiday Nights to 8 p.m. Open
Saturday Open, Holiday Nights to 8 p.m. Open
Sunday Open 10 to 5 Open

That gives Greenville something unusual for a holiday season. One of the two big estates is open every day of the week except the actual holidays. On a Monday off, the Workers' Hill village at Hagley is the one that's open. On a midweek Wednesday, it's the Yuletide house tour.

November 21 Requires a Ticket in Advance

Opening day at Winterthur is also the Holiday Market, which kicks off Yuletide with more than 50 local vendors. Everyone has to reserve a ticket ahead of time for either the morning session, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or the afternoon session, 2 to 5 p.m. That includes Winterthur members. Penns Woods Winery is pouring a complimentary sparkling toast, with non-alcoholic options. The day also includes firepits, marshmallow roasting and the Yuletide house tour, all framed around the theme of "home" in Winterthur's 75th anniversary year. Visitors enter at the Main Gate on Kennett Pike. The estate's address is 5105 Kennett Pike.

With the market on Saturday, November 21, the reservation is the step to take care of first, since there's no walk-up option, members included.

Hagley's holiday season hasn't started yet that Saturday, but the museum is still busy. Its drop-in family program, Science Sparks, runs November 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and gives visitors a hands-on engineering challenge. A household with one adult headed to the market and kids who'd rather build something can split up for the day without leaving the area.

The Friday After Thanksgiving Is the First Day Both Are Running

Thanksgiving Day is quiet at both estates. Winterthur is closed, and Hagley's season starts the next morning. Friday, November 27 is the first day both holiday seasons are open, and it's also the first of Winterthur's Holiday Nights. Here's how that day lines up:

  1. 10 a.m. Holidays at Hagley opens. The program includes make-and-take Victorian Christmas cards and ornaments, plus gingerbread cookies from a wood-burning stove in the Workers' Hill village.
  2. 4 p.m. Hagley's listed holiday hours end.
  3. 5 p.m. Winterthur's evening hours begin, with candlelit house tours, live music, firepits, specialty cocktails and seasonal food at the café.
  4. 5 to 7 p.m. The Hammered Copper Leaf Ornaments workshop runs on the first Holiday Night.
  5. 8 p.m. Winterthur closes for the night.

The gap between 4 and 5 p.m. is what makes it work. Hagley wraps up its holiday day about an hour before Winterthur turns on its evening hours, so you can cover both on the same Friday without overlap. On a normal Yuletide weekday, Winterthur closes at 5. Holiday Nights add three hours on Fridays and Saturdays only.

December 5 Is the Busiest Saturday

The first two December weekends are where all three calendars overlap, and Saturday, December 5 has the most on it.

Date Hagley Mt. Cuba Center Winterthur Holiday Nights
Fri, Dec 4 Holiday programs Elegant Winter Container, 1 to 3 p.m. Charcuterie workshop 6 to 7 p.m.; A Christmas Carol 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Sat, Dec 5 Santa, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Container workshop 10 a.m. to noon; Wreath-Making 1 to 3 p.m. Felted Holiday Cookies 5 to 7 p.m.; A Christmas Carol 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Sun, Dec 6 Holiday programs Yule Log luminary, 3:30 to 5 p.m. No evening hours
Fri, Dec 11 Holiday programs Holiday Arrangement, 10 a.m. to noon Third programmed weekend
Sat, Dec 12 Science Saturday: Frosty Forces, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Winter Solstice Wreath-Making, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Third programmed weekend

Santa at Hagley on December 5 includes a photo opportunity. It's covered by admission and free for members. Mt. Cuba's two workshops that day are back to back, with a container workshop in the morning and wreath-making after lunch. Winterthur's evening that Saturday includes a 6 p.m. performance of A Christmas Carol. All three can fit into one Saturday on paper. The tight spot is Mt. Cuba's wreath workshop, which ends at 3 p.m., two hours before Winterthur's evening programs begin at 5.

The following weekend is lighter. Hagley's Science Saturday: Frosty Forces on December 12 is a drop-in program about pushes, pulls and motion. It's included with admission and free for members. Mt. Cuba's Winter Solstice wreath session starts that afternoon at 3:30. Winterthur lists December 11 and 12 as its third programmed Holiday Nights weekend, and the season's evening lineup includes a cider-and-cheese tasting and a candlelight concert.

What Each Visit Costs Depends on Who's Coming

The estates price families very differently, so the right day can depend on who's in the car.

Yuletide admission at Winterthur is $33 for adults, $31 for seniors and students, and $12 for children ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and under are free, and groups of 15 or more pay $30 per person. The Yuletide tour is included with admission, and Winterthur strongly recommends reserving ahead online or at 800.448.3883.

Holidays at Hagley is included with regular museum admission, and the holiday page says kids 14 and under get in free. Hagley's general admission is $20 for adults and $16 for seniors, students and veteran-retirees. Advance tickets aren't required, and a ticket is good for entry within 14 calendar days of its date.

For two adults and two children ages 6 and 10, a Yuletide visit at standard admission comes to $90. Holidays at Hagley costs $40 for the same family, based on the holiday page's free-kids policy. Mt. Cuba is priced per workshop. Its workshop listings run $85 for most sessions and $89 for the Yule Log luminary. Supporter, advocate and conservator members pay $76.50 for most sessions and $80.10 for the luminary.

A Midday Stop on Kennett Pike

Doing Hagley in the morning and Winterthur in the evening leaves a few hours to fill in between. The Copper Dram at 3826 Kennett Pike now serves lunch. Town Square Delaware reported earlier this year that owner Tom Houser added it because the kitchen's food had become a draw of its own. The midday menu that outlet described includes bacon-wrapped dates, lavash chip chicken nachos, a BBQ chicken flatbread, ahi tuna poke and the house "Kinda Cubano" sandwich. Check hours before you go, especially on holiday weekends.

The Holidays Change the Schedule Again

The weekly pattern changes in the last two weeks of December, and the estates handle the holidays a little differently:

  • Thursday, December 24. Winterthur closes early. Hagley closes at 2 p.m.
  • Friday, December 25. Both are closed. Hagley's date list includes the 25th, but its closure notice says it's closed on Christmas Day.
  • Saturday, December 26. Winterthur is open but has no extended evening hours, even though it's a Saturday.
  • Friday, January 1. Winterthur is open on New Year's Day with daytime hours only. Hagley also lists January 1 on its holiday calendar.
  • Sunday, January 3. Both seasons end on the same day.

Christmas week brings Winterthur back to the same daytime schedule it opened with on November 21. The Friday and Saturday evenings that defined the first half of December stop on December 26 and January 1.
